Land use planning
DNR in the Sydney/South Coast area is working to build closer working relationships with the Department of Planning and local councils on strategic and statutory planning processes. It is also working closely with individual councils to ensure the implications of natural resource management plans, particularly Coastal Management Plans, Floodplain Risk Management Plans and Water Sharing Plans, are adequately considered in the development of draft Local Environment Plans and Development Control Plans.
Regional Strategies
The Department provides input into the development of the Illawarra, South Coast and Sydney-Canberra Corridor Regional Strategies. The Department developed a series of maps identifying high and low sensitive environments, which will enable the strategies to guide development while protecting valuable agricultural and natural assets.
Groundwater availability mapping
The potential availability and quality of groundwater from aquifer systems, and the vulnerability of these systems to pollution, has been mapped for some parts of the region. Availability mapping has recently been undertaken for the six councils covered by the Illawarra and South Coast Regional Strategies to identify significant aquifers that require protection in local environmental plans from inappropriate land uses.
Riparian corridor assessments
The Department undertakes strategic assessments of riparian corridors to identify important corridors and develop specific land use planning and management recommendations. These assessments are provided to local councils to inform their draft Local Environment Plans and Development Control Plans.
