Hunter Integrated Telemetry System

The Hunter Integrated Telemetry System (HITS) is operated and maintained by the Department of Natural Resources and is a key system in providing ‘real time’ stream flow information to a range of users.

What does HITS do?

HITS provides data on water conditions through a radio/telephone network of almost 70 stations across the Hunter, Central and Lower North coasts. DNR hydrographics staff utilise this and other data to calculate flows and volumes for computer modelling.

Who uses HITS?

HITS is relied upon by a wide variety of organisations including the Department of Environment and Conservation, Bureau of Meteorology, local government, industry, community, and the State Emergency Service (SES).

HITS is an integral part of the Hunter Salinity Trading Scheme, which assists mines and power generators to release stored saline water into the Hunter River under high flows - maintaining river health. The trading scheme is a world first.

Prior to the introduction of HITS, community members relayed river levels to the SES by telephone in times of flood. Telephone activated recording systems were also operational at a limited number of sites.

Now thanks to HITS, the job of watching river levels can be done almost instantaneously from a single location via the internet, allowing a more accurate assessment of conditions and more timely flood warnings.

HITS is a valuable and innovative system which helps DNR and the broader community manage our precious water resources.
